A broken Canva update caused template links to open a blank page and some embeds in designs to stop working. Canva has already shipped a fix, so you only need to refresh the page or fully restart the Canva app to pick it up.

The problem hit Canva on the web, the desktop app and the mobile app. The steps below cover all three.

How to load the Canva fix

  1. Refresh Canva in your browser. If you use Canva on the web, press Ctrl+R on Windows or Cmd+R on Mac. You can also click the reload button next to the address bar.
  2. Quit the Canva app completely. Closing the window isn't enough, because the app keeps running in the background. On Windows, right-click the Canva icon in the taskbar and pick Close window, then check the system tray for a Canva icon and quit it there too. On Mac, press Cmd+Q. On iPhone or Android, open the app switcher and swipe Canva away.
  3. Reopen Canva. Start the app again so it loads the latest version.
  4. Open the template link again. Click the template link, or open the design that has the embed. It should now load the template and show the embed.

Restart your computer or phone

If the app still shows a blank page, it may still hold old data from before the fix. Restart your computer or phone, then open Canva again. A full restart clears anything the app kept in memory.

Use Canva in Chrome while the app catches up

Sometimes the desktop app still won't load after a restart, while the website works fine. Go to canva.com in Chrome, sign in and open your designs there. Your designs live in your Canva account, so everything you made in the app shows up in the browser too.

Try the desktop app again later. Once it loads, you can switch back.

FAQ

Was Canva hacked? No. Canva said a bug fix that went out the wrong way caused the problem. Nobody broke into Canva's systems.

Does this affect the desktop app or the mobile app? Both, plus the website. On the web a refresh is enough. In the desktop or mobile app, quit the app fully and reopen it, and restart the device if that doesn't help.
