CapCut's Remove BG button has disappeared for a lot of people, including paid users, most likely because CapCut is reworking it in an update. Until it's back, cut the subject out of a screenshot with a different tool and import the result into CapCut as a PNG.

The main fix uses the cutout tool built into iPhone. If you're on Android or desktop, skip to the other two fixes further down.

How to remove a background without CapCut's Remove BG

  1. Screenshot the frame. Play your clip, pause on the frame with the person or object you want, and take a screenshot.
  2. Open the screenshot in Photos. Find it in the Photos app on your iPhone.
  3. Lift the subject. Touch and hold the subject. After a second, a glowing outline appears around it.
  4. Save the cutout. With your finger still on the subject, tap Share, then Save Image. This saves just the subject as a PNG with a see-through background. You can also tap Add Sticker if you want it in your sticker drawer.
  5. Add it to CapCut as an overlay. Open your CapCut project, tap Overlay, then Add overlay, and pick the PNG you just saved.
  6. Position the cutout. Pinch to resize it and drag it into place on the preview. Stretch the overlay clip on the timeline so it stays on screen as long as you need.

This works on a still image. It won't cut a moving person out of a whole video, so it's best for thumbnails, stickers and freeze-frame moments.

Use a free background remover website

If you're not on an iPhone, or the cutout comes out messy, use a free background remover site in your browser.

  1. Take a screenshot of the frame, the same as step 1 above.
  2. Open a free background remover site and upload the screenshot.
  3. Download the result as a PNG.
  4. In CapCut, tap Overlay, then Add overlay, and pick the PNG.

Use the Recolor app

The Recolor app can also turn an image into a PNG with the background removed. It takes a bit longer than the other two options, and it adds a watermark to the image.

  1. Open your screenshot in Recolor and remove the background.
  2. Export the result as a PNG.
  3. Add it to your CapCut project with Overlay, then Add overlay.
  4. Tap the overlay, then Crop, and crop the watermark out of the frame.

FAQ

Is CapCut's Remove BG feature gone for good? It's missing for a lot of people at once, paid users included, which points to CapCut changing the feature in an update. Use one of the workarounds here until it comes back.

Does paying for CapCut Pro bring Remove BG back? No. Paid users are missing it too, so upgrading won't restore the button.
