GIF vs AVI, in short
GIF is an animated image format: no sound, up to 256 colours per frame, looping wherever an image can show.
AVI is an old Windows video format from the 1990s. Older cameras, screen recorders and archives still produce it, but phones and most websites don't play it.
The animation is encoded as MPEG-4 video, with no sound track since the GIF has none. Video compression stores only what changes between frames, so the file is usually many times smaller than the GIF.
Frequently
Asked Questions
Does converting GIF to AVI lose quality?
It's re-encoded once, at good quality settings. Most people won't see a difference.
Does the AVI have sound?
No. A GIF has no sound to carry over.
How long does it take?
It depends on the length: re-encoding in the browser uses one processor core, so expect a minute or more per minute of video.
Is my file uploaded?
No. It's processed in your browser, on your own device, and never leaves it.
