What changes, and what doesn't
PNG is lossless: saving it again never makes it worse, which is why it's the format to edit in. JPG loses a little detail every time it's saved.
Converting doesn't bring back detail the JPG already lost, and the PNG is usually bigger. It also doesn't make the background transparent: the picture stays exactly as it is, just in a format that won't degrade.
Frequently
Asked Questions
Will converting to PNG improve quality?
No. It stops further loss when you edit and save again, but can't restore detail the JPG already lost.
Will the background become transparent?
No. Converting keeps the image as it is.
Why is the PNG bigger?
PNG stores the image without lossy compression.
Is my file uploaded?
No. It's processed in your browser, on your own device, and never leaves it.
