AAC and WAV, explained
AAC is the audio codec inside M4A and MP4 files, here as a raw .aac file. It sounds good at small sizes, but some apps only open it wrapped as M4A.
WAV is uncompressed audio: exact, but big, about 10 MB per minute of CD-quality stereo. It's the format to edit in.
Converting AAC to WAV doesn't bring back what AAC compression removed: the WAV sounds the same as the AAC, just in a bigger file. It's still the right move when an editor or a platform asks for WAV, or so that further edits don't lose more.
Frequently
Asked Questions
Does converting AAC to WAV lose quality?
No further loss, but no gain either: WAV keeps exactly what the AAC had.
Will the WAV be bigger or smaller?
Bigger: WAV doesn't compress the way AAC does.
How long does it take?
Seconds for most files: audio converts quickly, even in the browser.
Is my file uploaded?
No. It's processed in your browser, on your own device, and never leaves it.
