What Instagram Reels covers

On a 1080×1920 Reel, Instagram shows the Reels header and camera button across the top, the like, comment, share, more and audio buttons in a column at the lower right, and the username, caption and audio track across the bottom.

Instagram's own guidance for Reels and Stories ads is to keep roughly the top 14% and bottom 35% of the frame free of text and logos. For organic Reels the covered area is smaller, but the bottom third is still where most captions get hidden.

The overlay is an approximation: the exact layout changes with the phone's screen shape, the app version and how long the caption is, so it leaves a small margin. Treat the red areas as "probably covered" and keep important things inside the green box.

Before you post

  • Captions sit above the bottom caption block, not under it.
  • Nothing important is under the right-hand buttons.
  • Faces and products are inside the green safe area.
  • On-screen text isn't hidden by the top bar.
  • The video is 9:16, so the app doesn't crop it.

Frequently
Asked Questions

What is the Instagram Reels safe zone?

The centre of the 1080×1920 frame, away from the header at the top, the buttons on the lower right and the caption at the bottom.

Where should text go on a Reel?

In the middle of the frame, above the bottom third. For ads, Meta recommends keeping the top 14% and bottom 35% clear.

Does the grid crop my Reel?

Yes: the profile grid shows a 3:4 crop of the centre, so keep the subject centred.

Is my video uploaded?

No. It's shown in your browser with an overlay.
