What YouTube Shorts covers
On a 1080×1920 Short, YouTube shows search and menu icons at the top, a column of buttons (like, dislike, comment, share, remix) on the right from about the middle down, and the channel name, subscribe button and title across the bottom.
Shorts titles can wrap to two lines and push the bottom block higher, so leave extra room at the bottom when your title is long.
The overlay is an approximation: the exact layout changes with the phone's screen shape, the app version and how long the caption is, so it leaves a small margin. Treat the red areas as "probably covered" and keep important things inside the green box.
Before you post
- Captions sit above the bottom caption block, not under it.
- Nothing important is under the right-hand buttons.
- Faces and products are inside the green safe area.
- On-screen text isn't hidden by the top bar.
- The video is 9:16, so the app doesn't crop it.
Frequently
Asked Questions
What is the YouTube Shorts safe zone?
The centre of the 1080×1920 frame, clear of the top icons, the right-hand buttons and the channel and title block at the bottom.
Where should captions go on Shorts?
Just below the middle of the screen, above the title and channel bar, and away from the right edge.
Is the layout the same on desktop?
No. On a computer, Shorts play in a narrower player with the buttons outside the video, so phones are the case to design for.
Is my video uploaded?
No. It's shown in your browser with an overlay.
