Why MKV files won't open
MKV is a container: a box that holds the video, the sound and sometimes subtitles. OBS and many recorders save to MKV because a recording survives a crash. The catch is that phones, some editors and most upload forms want MP4.
Often the video inside the MKV is already H.264, the codec MP4 uses. Then nothing needs re-encoding: the tool copies the streams into an MP4, which takes seconds and keeps the exact quality. If the codec doesn't fit MP4, it re-encodes to H.264 video with AAC audio instead, which takes longer.
Only the first video track and the first audio track are kept. If your MKV has several audio tracks, like a game and a microphone recorded separately, export the one you want from your recorder first.
Frequently
Asked Questions
Does converting MKV to MP4 lose quality?
Usually not. When the video inside is H.264, it's copied as-is. Only files with other codecs are re-encoded.
Why is my MKV not playing on my phone?
Most phones and many apps don't open MKV files. The same video in an MP4 container plays everywhere.
What happens to subtitles in the MKV?
Subtitle tracks aren't carried over. The MP4 has the video and the first audio track.
Is my file uploaded?
No. It's processed in your browser, on your own device, and never leaves it.
