How low can you go
Bitrate is how much data each second of sound uses. Speech holds up well at low bitrates: 64 kbps is clear for podcasts, voice notes and lectures, and a one hour recording becomes about 28 MB.
Music needs more, because cymbals and high notes are the first things to get muddy. 128 kbps is a safe floor for music; 96 kbps works for background tracks.
A WAV recording compressed to 64 kbps can end up 20 times smaller.
Frequently
Asked Questions
What bitrate is good for voice?
64 kbps sounds clear for speech and keeps files very small.
Can I compress a WAV file?
Yes. Drop it here and pick a bitrate; WAVs shrink the most.
Will compression ruin music?
At 128 kbps it sounds fine for most listening. Lower than that, high frequencies start to suffer.
Is my file uploaded?
No. It's processed in your browser, on your own device, and never leaves it.
