MP3 and FLAC, explained
MP3 is the format every phone, car and app plays. It's lossy: it drops the sounds people hear least to keep files small.
FLAC is lossless: it keeps every detail of the original at roughly half the size of a WAV. Music collectors use it, but many phones and editors don't open it.
Converting MP3 to FLAC doesn't bring back what MP3 compression removed: the FLAC sounds the same as the MP3, just in a bigger file. It's still the right move when an editor or a platform asks for FLAC, or so that further edits don't lose more.
Frequently
Asked Questions
Does converting MP3 to FLAC lose quality?
No further loss, but no gain either: FLAC keeps exactly what the MP3 had.
Will the FLAC be bigger or smaller?
Bigger: FLAC doesn't compress the way MP3 does.
How long does it take?
Seconds for most files: audio converts quickly, even in the browser.
Is my file uploaded?
No. It's processed in your browser, on your own device, and never leaves it.
