M4A and FLAC, explained
M4A is AAC audio in an MP4-style file, Apple's usual audio format (Voice Memos, GarageBand, iTunes). It sounds a little better than MP3 at the same size.
FLAC is lossless: it keeps every detail of the original at roughly half the size of a WAV. Music collectors use it, but many phones and editors don't open it.
Converting M4A to FLAC doesn't bring back what M4A compression removed: the FLAC sounds the same as the M4A, just in a bigger file. It's still the right move when an editor or a platform asks for FLAC, or so that further edits don't lose more.
Frequently
Asked Questions
Does converting M4A to FLAC lose quality?
No further loss, but no gain either: FLAC keeps exactly what the M4A had.
Will the FLAC be bigger or smaller?
Bigger: FLAC doesn't compress the way M4A does.
How long does it take?
Seconds for most files: audio converts quickly, even in the browser.
Is my file uploaded?
No. It's processed in your browser, on your own device, and never leaves it.
