What an M4A file is
M4A is Apple's usual audio format: iPhone Voice Memos, GarageBand exports and iTunes downloads all use it. Inside is AAC audio in an MP4-style container, which sounds good at small sizes.
The problem is support. Some car stereos, older players, upload forms and editing tools only take MP3. Converting re-encodes the sound once; at 192 kbps the difference is hard to hear.
Purchased songs with copy protection (old iTunes files ending in .m4p) can't be converted. Regular M4A files can.
Frequently
Asked Questions
How do I convert an iPhone voice memo to MP3?
Share the memo to Files or your computer, then drop the M4A here and download the MP3.
Is M4A better quality than MP3?
At the same size, AAC in an M4A usually sounds a little better. MP3's advantage is that everything plays it.
What about M4P files?
Copy-protected M4P files can't be converted.
Is my file uploaded?
No. It's processed in your browser, on your own device, and never leaves it.
