What staircase captions look like

Staircase captions show your speech a few words at a time in white, uppercase text with a deep black drop shadow. The text sits on the left side of the frame. Each new line lands one row lower and a little further right than the one before, so a run of lines traces a diagonal down the screen.

After three lines the layout jumps back to the top and starts a new staircase. Only the current line is fully on screen. The previous one hangs on for a moment, then fades out as the next one arrives.

Each line fades in from a slight blur and slides up a few pixels. The whole line appears at once, with no color highlight on the spoken word, so the look stays calm next to louder caption styles.

Why the stepped layout holds attention

When every caption lands in the same spot, the viewer stops noticing that it changed. Moving each line down and to the right gives the eye a new place to look every second or two, and that small bit of motion pulls it to the next line.

The steps also show where a thought is going. A few lines stepping down read like one sentence building up, and the jump back to the top tells the viewer a new thought has started. That suits voiceovers and storytime clips where you talk in full sentences.

The text uses a shadow instead of a thick outline, so it stays readable over busy B-roll without looking heavy.

Tune the steps to your video

Step size and row spacing

Set how far right each line moves and how far down it drops. Push both up for a steep diagonal or pull them in for a tight stack.

Lines per staircase

Choose anywhere from 1 to 8 lines before the layout resets to the top. Three is the default.

Shadow

Change the shadow color, blur, depth and intensity. A deep dark shadow keeps white text readable on bright footage.

Font and case

Pick regular, bold or black weight, set the font size and text color, and switch between uppercase and lowercase.

Entrance and exit

Choose a snappy, smooth or bouncy entrance, how blurred each line starts, and how long the last line lingers before it fades.

Words per line and position

Show 1 to 10 words per line, let smart chunking break lines at natural pauses, and place captions at the top, center or bottom.

Frequently
Asked Questions

What are staircase captions?

Staircase captions are short caption lines where each one appears a row lower and further right than the last, forming a diagonal down the screen. In Sycamore the style uses white uppercase text with a deep drop shadow.

Does the staircase caption generator highlight each word?

No. Each line appears as a whole, timed to the words you speak, without a color change on the active word. If you want word-by-word highlighting, pick a different Sycamore style such as Mozi.

How many lines show before the staircase resets?

Three by default. You can set anywhere from 1 to 8 lines per staircase in the editor.

Can I use staircase captions on horizontal video?

Yes. The style works on 16:9 and 1:1 video as well as 9:16 vertical video for TikTok, Reels and Shorts.

Can I make staircase captions lowercase or change the shadow?

Yes. You can switch the text between uppercase and lowercase, and adjust the shadow color, blur, depth and intensity.
