FLAC and M4A, explained
FLAC is lossless: it keeps every detail of the original at roughly half the size of a WAV. Music collectors use it, but many phones and editors don't open it.
M4A is AAC audio in an MP4-style file, Apple's usual audio format (Voice Memos, GarageBand, iTunes). It sounds a little better than MP3 at the same size.
Going from FLAC to M4A makes the file much smaller. M4A is lossy, so at low bitrates you lose some detail; at 192 kbps or more most people can't hear a difference.
Frequently
Asked Questions
Does converting FLAC to M4A lose quality?
M4A is lossy, so a little. At 192 kbps or more it's hard to hear.
Will the M4A be bigger or smaller?
Much smaller, often 5 to 10 times.
How long does it take?
Seconds for most files: audio converts quickly, even in the browser.
Is my file uploaded?
No. It's processed in your browser, on your own device, and never leaves it.
