FLAC and AAC, explained

FLAC is lossless: it keeps every detail of the original at roughly half the size of a WAV. Music collectors use it, but many phones and editors don't open it.

AAC is the audio codec inside M4A and MP4 files, here as a raw .aac file. It sounds good at small sizes, but some apps only open it wrapped as M4A.

Going from FLAC to AAC makes the file much smaller. AAC is lossy, so at low bitrates you lose some detail; at 192 kbps or more most people can't hear a difference.

Frequently
Asked Questions

Does converting FLAC to AAC lose quality?

AAC is lossy, so a little. At 192 kbps or more it's hard to hear.

Will the AAC be bigger or smaller?

Much smaller, often 5 to 10 times.

How long does it take?

Seconds for most files: audio converts quickly, even in the browser.

Is my file uploaded?

No. It's processed in your browser, on your own device, and never leaves it.
