WAV and AAC, explained
WAV is uncompressed audio: exact, but big, about 10 MB per minute of CD-quality stereo. It's the format to edit in.
AAC is the audio codec inside M4A and MP4 files, here as a raw .aac file. It sounds good at small sizes, but some apps only open it wrapped as M4A.
Going from WAV to AAC makes the file much smaller. AAC is lossy, so at low bitrates you lose some detail; at 192 kbps or more most people can't hear a difference.
Frequently
Asked Questions
Does converting WAV to AAC lose quality?
AAC is lossy, so a little. At 192 kbps or more it's hard to hear.
Will the AAC be bigger or smaller?
Much smaller, often 5 to 10 times.
How long does it take?
Seconds for most files: audio converts quickly, even in the browser.
Is my file uploaded?
No. It's processed in your browser, on your own device, and never leaves it.
