An 800×800 square ready for YouTube Studio.
Designed for a tiny circle
YouTube asks for an 800×800 square and shows it as a circle, usually at about 98×98 pixels next to your channel name and much smaller in comments. The file limit is 4 MB.
The image is cropped square from the centre, and the circle then cuts the corners off. Keep your face or logo in the middle with some space around it, and skip small text: nobody can read it at 98 pixels.
Simple works best. A face filling most of the frame, or a logo on a plain background, stays recognisable at every size.
