The YouTube thumbnail rules

YouTube recommends 1280×720 pixels, a 16:9 frame, with a width of at least 640 pixels. Thumbnails display small in search and on phones, so a sharp 1280×720 image with big, readable text works best.

YouTube also caps thumbnail files at 2 MB. If your export is bigger, lower the quality slider: most thumbnails look the same at 80 to 85.

Making the thumbnail from your own video? Extract a sharp frame first with the frame tool, then resize it here.

Frequently
Asked Questions

What size is a YouTube thumbnail?

1280×720 pixels (16:9), at least 640 pixels wide.

What's the file size limit?

2 MB. Lower the quality here if yours is bigger.

What if my image isn't 16:9?

It's cropped from the centre to 16:9, then sized to 1280×720, so keep faces and text away from the edges.

Is my file uploaded?

No. It's processed in your browser, on your own device, and never leaves it.
