Remove Formatting from SRT
Some players show formatting tags as text, and some platforms reject them. Remove italics, bold, colours and position codes and keep only the words and timing.
Runs in your browser. Your subtitles are never uploaded.
Clean up in three steps
Add the SRT
Paste it or open the file.
Choose ALL CAPS handling
Optionally turn shouty all-caps subtitles into sentence case.
Remove and download
Same timing, same numbering, just the words.
What gets removed
SRT files can carry HTML-style tags: <i> for italics, <b> for bold, <u> for underline and <font color="#ffff00"> for colour. Many also carry ASS-style codes in braces, like {\an8} to move a subtitle to the top of the screen. Players that don't understand them show them as text.
This removes all of them, then tidies the spaces and blank lines they leave behind. Subtitles that were only a tag are dropped.
The sentence case option rewrites ALL CAPS subtitles in lower case with a capital at the start of each sentence (and for "I"). Names and acronyms will need a quick check afterwards.
Small details that matter
HTML and ASS codes
Both <tags> and {\codes} are removed.
Timing kept
Start and end times don't change.
Any format
Works on SRT, VTT, ASS and SBV.
Frequently
Asked Questions
Why do I see <i> in my subtitles?
Your player doesn't support SRT formatting tags, so it shows them as text. Removing them fixes it.
Will this remove positioning like {\an8}?
Yes. The subtitle will show in the player's default position, usually the bottom.
Can I keep italics but remove colours?
Not with this tool; it removes all formatting. Converting SRT to VTT keeps italics and drops <font> colours.
Is my file uploaded?
No. It's processed in your browser.
