X (Twitter) Character Counter

X doesn't count characters the obvious way: a link is always 23, and an emoji counts as 2. Type or paste your post to see the count X will use.

How X counts characters

A post on X can be 280 characters for free accounts. Premium subscribers can post up to 25,000, but only the first 280 show in the timeline before "Show more".

Every link counts as 23 characters, however long or short it is, because X shortens it to a t.co link. Emoji, and Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters, count as 2 each. Most other letters, numbers, spaces and punctuation count as 1.

That's why a post that looks short can be rejected, and why this counter can differ from a plain character count.
